Dissecting the Details | A Custom Built-In

When our client asked for a custom built-in for their primary suite, they knew I was ready for the task. It was important that this new piece look original to the home, which was already adorned in significant architectural details. Every great design begins with a solid plan, and so the work began.

Every selection was made with the same intention: that this piece would feel as though it had been part of the home from the beginning. We used solid brass materials for the cabinet hardware, including ball pulls with an antique brass finish. The cabinet was to have a locking mechanism similar to a traditional antique wardrobe, but we opted for a coordinating keyhole instead to dress the front of the large french-paned doors.

To soften the scale of this mighty unit, the glazed upper doors are lined with a gathered sheer in a subtle stripe, concealing what is stored within while adding a layer of delicacy to an otherwise substantial piece. The stripe's neutrality marries naturally with the room's creamy white paint, offering a soft counterpoint to the boldness of the surrounding palette.

Practical considerations were woven seamlessly into the design as well. A bank of drawers nestles between the closet doors for folded storage, hanging rods and adjustable shelving finish the interior, and brass metal mesh screens on two hinged doors conceal the necessary cable boxes and electronics with the same decorative intention that guided every other decision in the room. The result is a built-in that functions as beautifully as it looks, earning its place among the home's most significant architectural details.

Here’s a closer look and a few behind-the-scenes moments of the work in progress:

We love this custom piece and how authentic it feels to our client’s home. Its scale and function integrate seamlessly with the room's decorative elements and furnishings, offering the finishing touch on a primary suite that is as considered as it is beautiful.
